Daiichi Sankyo, Inc., headquartered in Parsippany, NJ, is the U.S. subsidiary of Daiichi Sankyo Co., Ltd., a global pharmaceutical company. Global clinical development and regulatory activities are headquartered at Daiichi Sankyo Pharma Development in Edison, New Jersey. Existing research is primarily focused on bringing forth novel therapies in oncology, including immuno-oncology, with additional focus on new horizon areas, such as pain management, neurodegenerative diseases, heart and kidney diseases, and other rare diseases.

In the US, we currently market therapies in hypertension, thrombosis, stroke risk reduction, dyslipidemia, diabetes, acute coronary syndrome, opioid-induced constipation and metastatic melanoma.

Medical Affairs Fellowship
1 Two-Year Position

The goal of the two-year Medical Affairs Fellowship program is to provide real-world, hands-on experience within the traditional functional areas of a Medical Affairs Department. The first fellowship year will serve as an introduction to the core functional areas in Medical Affairs including Medical Information & Education and Medical Research & Strategy. The first year is designed to be project-based as opposed to rotational.  Potential therapeutic areas of focus may include thrombosis, pain and oncology. In addition, the fellowship includes field-based opportunities to interact with key medical leaders in various therapeutic areas of focus for Daiichi Sankyo, Inc.  

In the second fellowship year, the program design creates a framework for those individuals who want to experience concentrated time within a particular functional area of the Medical Affairs Department.  The fellow will have the opportunity to build upon their first year and concentrate their time within specific Medical Affairs functional areas based upon their personal interest and experience as well as the business needs of the Company. The assigned responsibilities and time allocated will be determined in collaboration with key stakeholders prior to the start of the second year. As a result, the fellow will gain a greater in-depth understanding in that functional area, and the interconnections each functional area has within the pharmaceutical industry.

Medical Affairs Fellowship Activities & Experiences May Include:


Medical Information

  • Enhance medical writing skills through creating, updating and reviewing fair and scientifically balanced response documents to unsolicited medical inquiries
  • Participate in dossier and testimony development to ensure appropriate tools are available upon receiving unsolicited requests from formulary committees

Promotional Review

  • Serve as a scientific resource to the Advertising Review Committee (ARC) to evaluate promotional materials
  • Work cross functionally to revise internally- and externally-facing materials


  • Strategically review the medical literature to identify educational gaps to enhance patient care
  • Assist in coordination and planning of advisory board meetings
  • Participate in medical slide development and review
  • Participate in product life-cycle management and strategy
  • Participate in scientific communication efforts and disseminate information internally
  • Contribute to the development of novel clinical and scientific areas of interest for Investigator Initiated Study support and participate in scientific reviews of unsolicited proposals
  • Participate in the publication strategy, planning and development to ensure manuscripts are scientifically accurate
  • Work with a publication vendor to ensure evidence-based data, as they relate to the Daiichi Sankyo therapeutic areas, are being disseminated within the healthcare community
  • Assist in strategic congress planning and coordination with key internal stakeholders on medical affairs activities -Contribute to medical and scientific competitive intelligence monitoring and reporting


  • Opportunity to observe, learn and collaborate with an experienced Medical Science Liaison (MSL) and/or Health Outcome Liaison (HOL) in identified field medical activities
  • Gain an understanding of the laws, regulations and policies required to help ensure interactions with healthcare professionals are legal and ethical
  • Identify and profile Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs)
  • Prepare for and participate in scientific discussion with a KOL with the supervision of an experienced MSL
  • Attend national scientific conferences and medical meetings and participate in assigned activities
  • Prepare for and support experienced HOL/MSL in a Medicaid public testimony
  • Prepare for and support a clinical overview for an institution or managed care customer along with experienced MSL/HOL

Commercial, New Product Planning Fellowship
1 Two-Year Position

The Commercial, New Product Planning Fellowship program offers a unique opportunity for the Pharm.D. or Pharm.D./ M.B.A. graduate to gain valuable industry experience at a pharmaceutical company with a rich research history and a promising future of growth. This two-year program is designed to provide a comprehensive Commercial, New Product Planning overview supporting compounds across the full spectrum of product development, allowing hands-on opportunities, active coaching and mentoring, as well as market research and business analytics skill building. Our goal is to help provide the fellow with the tools necessary for highly successful business intelligence and market research careers in the pharmaceutical industry.

The core focus of the program will be on the Daiichi Sankyo, Inc. marketed products, internal pipeline and business development opportunities in areas such as cardiovascular, metabolic disorders, oncology and pain.


Primary responsibilities, which will be developed throughout the fellowship, include:

  • Participating in market research activities in support of compounds throughout all stages of product development (pre-clinical through launch)
  • Designing and implementing qualitative/quantitative primary market research
  • Interpreting patient and physician research
  • Validating forecast assumptions and identify key market drivers
  • Presenting research findings and data to senior management
  • Analyzing and retrieving pivotal data through various secondary resources and syndicated reports
  • Investigating and presenting scientific information
  • Integrating core drug development and market inputs into commercial value analysis
  • Supporting product/market/company evaluations in collaboration with the Business Development team
  • Monitoring and updating competitive intelligence documents
  • Attending various medical and scientific meetings/presentations to maintain competitive intelligence for Daiichi Sankyo
  • Partnering with brand teams in the development and initiation of commercialization activities
